One of my personal goals is to help improve the health of individuals and overall society. I find that my current role has allowed me to follow this goal and hopefully influence health behavior change. I have assisted in the launch of disease awareness campaigns and media tours. I have also contributed to the development of communication materials focused on raising awareness of specific diseases and measures to help protect against these diseases. This includes media outreach letters, key messages and Q&As for spokespeople, press releases, fact sheets, infographics, social media content and more.
Additionally, the translational approach taken in the Human Health program began to show me how health-related research can be applied through many outlets. At work, I’ve seen the importance of conducting research and the influence digital and social media assets have in this day and age. I have helped create videos to be shared online with the goal of providing educational health information and resources, while also creatively sharing patient stories. My team has also utilized infographics and social tiles to display and share disease information through a more consumer-friendly method. This was something I was already familiar with thanks to one of my Human Health courses that encouraged us to design an infographic to present to our class. We were responsible for interpreting a study of choice and sharing concise, key highlights from the study through an infographic. This project was engaging and encouraged our class to think creatively – a characteristic that is useful for in my current role.
During my time in the Human Health program, I completed various group projects and presentations. This helped develop presentation and public speaking skills that have been beneficial in my career. I feel confident when presenting ideas and can clearly communicate with team members, senior level colleagues, and clients. Also, my Human Health coursework gave me confidence in reviewing and understanding peer-reviewed articles. This has been helpful at work, especially when presenting key takeaways from studies and referencing materials. Overall, the Human Health program laid a strong foundation of knowledge and skills that I have been able to utilize and apply at work every day. I hope to continue influencing health behavior change and encouraging individuals to take measures to improve their health.
